Jeff Goes Home!

28 September 1998

'Les Mis' has been my favourite show for nine years, and therefore I was very happy to be able to see the Edinburgh production. I was especially looking forward to seeing Jeff Leyton as Valjean again. I saw him in the show last year in London, and I liked his portrayal a lot. The convict Valjean He didn't disappoint me, in fact, his performance of Valjean has become even stronger. It is obvious that he understands every bit of the character's emotions, and that he actually lives the role. The feelings he brings across seem so real, and he manages to make Valjean's character development very clear - from the despaired and bitter convict to the loving and caring father of Cosette.

Jeff's voice is also brilliant. Again, the impressive thing is how he manages to convey emotions so well, besides the fact that his voice has got tremendous power and an impressive range. His 'Bring Him Home', for example, was very moving.

My overall impression was that the tour production of 'Les Mis' is very good - the energy level is very high and the cast manages to get that special 'Les Mis feeling' that makes you feel like part of the show across very well. So I'd recommend anybody who gets the chance, to see the show.
