Irish Actor Michael McCarthy Is Final Javert of Les Miz, Starting May 6

Michael McCarthy, the Irish and West End actor who has played Inspector Javert around the world in Les Misérables, will be the monomaniacal hunter in the final weeks of the Broadway run.

Producer Cameron Mackintosh announced that Terrence Mann, Tony Award-nominated for the part, will continue to May 4, and McCarthy will be the final Javert, making his Broadway debut May 6 and continuing to the final show, May 18 at the Imperial Theatre. Mann re-joined the company Feb. 4 and extended his stay to May. A prior directing commitment makes any further extension impossible. The Broadway debut of McCarthy is made possible with the cooperation of Actors' Equity Association.

McCarthy has played the role around the world, in London, Sydney, Melbourne, Dublin, throughout the UK and in last summer’s landmark Chinese premiere in Shanghai. He also played Javert at the open-air concert at the Chelmsford Festival to an audience of 25,000, and in last year's Scandinavain concert tour (going to Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo, Helsinki and Gothenberg) with the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

He began his long association with the Victor Hugo inspired musical in 1990, making his West End debut as the Factory Foreman, a role he later performed in the musical's historic 10th Anniversary concert at the Royal Albert Hall (shown in the U.S. on PBS and available on video and CD).

McCarthy joins the New York cast direct from the West End production. While his two weeks performing in New York will be his Broadway debut, it will not be his American debut with Les Miz, Mackintosh said. Prior to last summer's Shanghai engagement, he joined the American national company in San Francisco.

The final Broadway company, featuring Randal Keith (Jean Valjean), Jayne Paterson (Fantine), Kevin Kern (Marius), Diana Kaarina (Eponine), Sandra Turley (Cosette), Christopher Mark Peterson (Enjolras), Nick Wyman (Thénardier) and Aymee Garcia (Madame Thénardier).
